I’m interrupting our regularly scheduled program, WhAt MeN WaNt, and I’m introducing WoRkOuT WeDnEsDaYs! I’ll be giving expert advice, tips, and helpful exercises, to help you be a better, more healthy, YoU.
That’s what the new and improved SiNgLe MoMmY FiLeS is all about. I can’t do all of this growing and not share the things that’s improving my life, mentally, emotionally, relationally, and physically. So, today, we’re going to focus on the latter.
Being physically fit is not just about being a size 0 or 4. It’s definitely not about attracting a man, and although they’re very visual, they happen to like us in all flavors, shapes, and sizes.
It’s about feeling better about yourself, having more energy, eliminating stress, and…oh yeah…possibly living a longer, quality life. Exercise will not only help you with those things, it will help you in other areas too. So before I actually get into “what” and “how,” I want to talk about “why.” There are many benefits of regular exercise and physical activity, and here they are:
No. 1: Engage & Burn
Exercise can help prevent weight gain or help maintain weight loss. A general goal is to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. When you engage in any physical activity, you burn calories. But if you want to lose weight or meet specific goals, you may need to exercise more. Basically, the more you engage, the more you burn.
I know … I know … trust me, I know. It can be hard to set aside time to work out or go to the gym, when you’re juggling crazy work, kid, man, and home schedules, so the good thing is, if you’ve been putting off that Zumba class, or you just can’t seem to get your two feet up on that treadmill that’s collecting dust in your basement, you can get more active throughout the day, by simply taking the stairs instead of an elevator and avoiding the parking wars for close spots, and find you one further away from the door of the department store, to get those extra steps in…it all counts.
No. 2: Boost your Energy
Do you ever leave out of the grocery store out of breath or feel like you’re about to pass out after climbing a flight of stairs? Nobody? Really? Oh okay, well, I have before. Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance, by helping your heart and lungs work more efficiently, giving you more energy to tackle the grocery shopping and stair climbing.
No. 3: Spark up Your Sex Life
Speaking of energy, if you’ve been feeling too tired or too out of shape to enjoy physical intimacy with your boo thang, you have to hurry up and fix that. Regular physical activity can leave you feeling energized, looking better, and feeling confident about yourself, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. Annnnd ladies, some experts believe that regular physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for women. “Oh okay! 1 and 2 and 3 and 4…”
No. 4: A Better Mood
I can definitely use an emotional lift and a way to blow off steam after a stressful day, on a regular basis. A gym workout, a Pilates class, a kick-boxing session (where you can kick and punch the mess out of your boss, I mean bag), or a brisk 30-minute walk through your neighborhood, can help. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. You may even feel better about your appearance and yourself, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. We are what we think, right?
No. 5: Sleeping Beauty
Who’s all sleep deprived?! I am! I am! *throws two hands up in the air* Regular physical activity can actually help those of us that are struggling to fall asleep, fall a lot faster, and those of us who can’t seem to stay asleep, sleep better through the night. Oh and by the way, you shouldn’t exercise to close to bed time you may be too energized to get your sleep on.
No. 6: A Healthy You
Worried about heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer, or arthritis? Well, regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage all of the above as well as a wide range of other health problems and concerns, no matter what your current weight is. Remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have any health concerns.
No. 7: Fun-ercise
On a lighter note, exercise and physical activity can be a fun experience and a way to unwind. It doesn’t have to be all elliptical and tread-milly. You can do something that you enjoy, like take a dance class, where you’re free to drop it like it’s hot, or climb a pole, or two.
You can connect with family or friends in fun social settings. Enjoy the outdoors, hiking a trail or canyon (they’re popular here in LA). Find a physical activity that you enjoy, and just do it. And don’t worry, if you get bored with it, try something new.
